Why is pesticide exposure in the East Coachella Valley an Issue?

"Pesticides" is an umbrella term for several types of chemicals, including herbicides, insecticides, fumigants, and others. Their job is to control weeds, insects, and other undesired effects. However, pesticides are harmful to humans, and threaten the health of agricultural workers, their families, and those who live and work in the East Coachella Valley. California used 205 million pounds of pesticides in 2017, with Riverside County using 2,717,182 lbs. alone. (CDPR, 2021)
